Manifestation Changes lives — And Here's Why It Actually Works

Your thoughts shape your reality. Not because of magic, but because of how your mind and energy work together.

Manifestation is everywhere right now - scroll TikTok for five minutes and you'll see people manifesting their dream lives, soulmates, money, you name it. But what actually is it? Does it work? And is there any real explanation for why, or is it just spiritual nonsense?

I'm a psychic medium and energy healer, so you'd think I'd be all about the mystical side of things. And I am - but I also believe there's a real, practical explanation for how manifestation works. It's not just woo-woo. There's actually science behind it, combined with genuine spiritual energy. Let me explain.

What Manifestation Actually Is

Manifestation is about aligning your thoughts, beliefs, energy, and actions with what you want to create. What you focus on, you move toward. That's not mystical - that's just how the human mind works.

It's not new either. Every spiritual tradition has some version of this:

  • In Hinduism, there's the concept of sankalpa (intention setting)
  • In Buddhism, visualization is used to cultivate specific states of being
  • In Christianity, prayer is about faith in things unseen

The core idea is always the same: what you hold in your mind and heart shapes what shows up in your reality.

The Science Behind It (Yes, Really)

This is where sceptics usually roll their eyes. But there's actual science that explains why manifestation works - even if scientists don't call it that.

Your Brain Has a Filter

There's a part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). It's basically a filter that decides what information you pay attention to and what you ignore. When you set a clear intention - let's say you decide you want to become a writer - suddenly you start noticing writing opportunities everywhere. Articles about freelancing. People talking about content creation. Job postings you never would have seen before.

Those opportunities were always there. Your brain just wasn't filtering for them. Once you set the intention, your RAS highlights anything relevant to that goal.

This happened to me when I decided to build my business as a medium. Suddenly I was seeing posts about how to use social media for spiritual work, overhearing conversations about holistic businesses, bumping into people who needed exactly what I offered. My brain started showing me the path because I'd told it what I was looking for.

Your Thoughts Physically Change Your Brain

This is called neuroplasticity. When you repeatedly think about something or visualize it, you're actually creating and strengthening neural pathways in your brain. Your brain doesn't know the difference between something you vividly imagine and something you actually experience.

There's a famous study where people who just visualized doing finger exercises increased their finger strength by 13.5% - without ever physically training. Their brains changed just from the mental practice.

Athletes do this all the time. They mentally rehearse their performance over and over until it feels familiar, so when it's time to actually compete, their brain and body already know what to do. That's why visualization works. You're training your nervous system to treat your goal as inevitable.

Belief Changes Your Body

This is the placebo effect, and it's one of the most well-documented phenomena in medicine. When people believe something will help them, it often does - even if they're given a sugar pill instead of real medicine.

Studies have shown that placebos can trigger actual chemical changes in the brain. People's bodies release endorphins, reduce inflammation, improve performance - all because they believed they would.

That's the power of belief. It's not "fake" healing or improvement. It's real. Your expectation literally creates the evidence.

When You Believe It, You Act Like It

This is where manifestation becomes really practical. When you genuinely believe something is yours, you start unconsciously behaving like someone who has that thing.

If you believe you're going to meet your person this year, you might put more effort into how you present yourself. You might say yes to social invitations you'd normally skip. You might be more open when you meet new people. Those tiny shifts in behaviour create opportunities that wouldn't have existed otherwise.

There's a whole branch of psychology called Behavioral Activation that's based on this idea: act first, and the feelings follow. Don't wait to feel motivated - start acting like the person who already has what you want, and your reality will start shifting to match.

How I Actually Manifest (No Fluff)

Here's what's worked for me, and what I recommend to clients:

Get specific. Don't just say "I want love." Describe exactly what that looks like. What does your ideal relationship feel like? What do you do together? How do they make you feel? I like to visualize it like a scene from a film - what am I wearing, what does the room look like, what can I smell, how does my body feel? Get detailed.

Visualise daily. Spend time every day picturing your goal as if it's already real. Feel it. The more familiar it becomes in your mind, the more your brain treats it as inevitable rather than impossible.

Act accordingly. This is the part people skip. If you want to attract a healthy relationship, start living like someone who values themselves and has high standards. If you want financial abundance, start making financial decisions like someone who's abundant (within reason - don't go into debt). Manifestation without aligned action is just daydreaming.

Let go of the timeline. This is the hardest part. You can't control when or how it happens. You hold the vision, you take the action, and then you trust the process. Trying to force the timing or micromanage the details cancels out the energy. Faith is freeing. Fear and doubt are limiting. Choose faith.

The Spiritual Side

Here's where I add what science can't fully explain: energy is real. When you hold a clear intention and align your energy with it, you're literally broadcasting a frequency into the universe. Like attracts like. That's not pseudoscience - quantum physics is starting to catch up with what spiritual traditions have known forever.

When I work with clients on manifestation, we often combine visualization with energy healing to clear blocks that might be sabotaging their desires. Because sometimes it's not just about thinking positive - it's about clearing old beliefs, past hurts, or energetic patterns that are keeping you stuck in the same cycles.

The Bottom Line

Manifestation isn't magic, and it won't erase real-world challenges or systemic barriers. But it is a powerful tool to direct your focus, energy, and behaviour toward what you actually want instead of what you fear.

It's ancient wisdom backed by neuroscience. It's the simple but radical idea that belief + aligned action + energetic focus = real transformation.

And maybe that's the real magic: when you decide something is yours, act like it's yours, and trust that it's coming - eventually, it becomes yours.

With light and love,
Sarah

The part about acting like the person who already has it really hit me. That’s where I think most people (myself included) get stuck!

Thank you, Sarah. I’ll have to come come back to this! 🙏🏽
